Swimming: Orchid Beach has the safest and best salt water swimming on the island. There are always shallow lagoons around Waddy Point that are ideal for families with young children. Mid to high tide is best.
Fishing: Most gutters in the local area are good for tailor when in season, and bream, whiting and flathead all year round. Fishing is always good off the point but expect to lose tackle.
Whale watching: during the winter months can be spectacular around Orchid Beach. Whales often breach close off Waddy Point in recognition of their last landfall before making it to Platypus and Hervey Bay.
From Waddy you can walk or drive over the dunes to South Waddy Beach. This is one of the only beaches that has no vehicle access. It's a great spot for young kids and well known for good "worming" at low tide.
It is an easy walk to the top where you can take in the panoramic view looking north. There is a very steep drop off the northern end of the dune that kids love to slide down.
